How cybersecurity IAM hiring works in Ireland — and where you stand today

You already have solid technical knowledge. So Phase 1 is not about teaching identity from scratch — it is about two things that decide whether that knowledge turns into a job offer: understanding exactly how Irish employers run their selection process, and diagnosing your gaps against what Irish IAM roles actually require, so we spend every following week on the right thing.

How this works. We move one phase at a time. You go through this page, complete the self-diagnostic at the end, and we review your progress together once a week. Each review sets the focus for the next week. Do the diagnostic honestly — it is the map we both work from.
Your quiet advantage: as a Stamp 1G graduate you can start immediately with no sponsorship for 12 months. That is a real selling point in almost every stage below — we will use it deliberately.

How Ireland hires: the selection funnel

Most cybersecurity/IAM roles in Ireland — whether at a multinational, an MSSP, a Big-4 practice or a financial-services firm — run through the same shape. Many roles are reached through recruitment agencies (Cpl, Morgan McKinley, Reperio, Archer), not just direct applications. Here is the funnel:

1 · Application & CV screen (ATS + recruiter) 2 · Recruiter / agency phone screen 3 · Hiring-manager screen 4 · Technical interview (IAM scenarios) 5 · Competency / STAR interview 6 · Final / panel · Offer Each stage filters — and each one tests something different. Prepare for the right thing at the right stage.
The stage most candidates underestimate in Ireland is Stage 5 — the competency (STAR) interview. Irish employers lean on it heavily. Strong technical people fail here by giving vague, unstructured answers. We fix that specifically in a later phase.

The 6 stages in detail

Click each stage to see what they assess and how to pass it.

1 Application & CV screen (ATS + recruiter)
What they assessDoes your CV match the job's keywords and read as an identity professional? Automated ATS filters + a quick human scan (seconds).
How to passAn IAM-titled CV: lead with Active Directory / IAM / MFA / lifecycle experience, the exact tools in the ad (Entra, Okta, Conditional Access, SailPoint), and your certifications. Mirror the ad's language.
2 Recruiter / agency phone screen (15–30 min)
What they assessBasic fit, motivation, salary expectation, availability, and — critically — work authorisation. Often a third-party agency, not the employer.
How to passHave a crisp 60-second pitch ("IAM analyst, ex-AD/identity background, Security+ and SC-300 in progress"). State your Stamp 1G clearly as an asset. Know your salary range (SOC/IAM ~€37–48k entry). Be warm and easy to represent.
3 Hiring-manager screen
What they assessCan you actually do the role? Your experience walkthrough, how you think about access and identity, and whether you'd fit the team.
How to passTell your story as an identity story: the AD/IAM work at Desktop S.A., framed in the language of the role. Ask smart questions about their stack (Entra? Okta? SailPoint?).
4 Technical interview (IAM scenarios)
What they assessReal IAM depth: identity lifecycle (JML), Conditional Access, SSO and federation (SAML/OIDC/SCIM), RBAC vs ABAC, access reviews, PAM, troubleshooting ("a user can't access an app — walk me through it").
How to passAnswer from hands-on practice, not theory. Use scenarios: how you'd handle a mover, an offboarding, a broken SSO. This is where your lab work pays off — we build that in later phases.
5 Competency / behavioural interview — the STAR round
What they assessHow you work: teamwork, handling pressure, communication with non-technical stakeholders, ownership, dealing with a security incident. Ireland uses this round heavily.
How to passAnswer every behavioural question with the STAR structure (Situation, Task, Action, Result). Prepare 6–8 real stories in advance. See the next section.
6 Final / panel & offer
What they assessFinal culture fit, sometimes a senior panel, references, and the practicalities — start date and, for you, the path from Stamp 1G to a sponsored permit.
How to passReassure on availability (immediate, no sponsorship needed now), show enthusiasm for the team, and have references ready. Negotiate calmly.

The STAR interview — why it matters so much in Ireland

Irish employers, especially multinationals, Big-4 and financial services, structure their behavioural round around competency-based questions answered with the STAR method. This is not optional polish — it is how they score you. A brilliant engineer who rambles will lose to an average one who answers in clean STAR.

S Situation T Task A Action R Result Set the scene → your responsibility → what YOU did → the measurable outcome.

Try it — in your head

Question: "Tell me about a time you resolved an access or security issue under pressure." Draft a 4-sentence answer using S-T-A-R about a real incident from your IT-support days. We will refine these together in a dedicated interview-prep phase.

Deep STAR practice (building and rehearsing your 6–8 stories) is a later phase. For now, just know the structure exists and start noticing your own stories.

What Irish IAM roles actually require

These are the competencies that show up across Irish IAM job ads. You don't need all of them to apply — but you should know where you stand on each. That's what the diagnostic below measures.

AreaWhat employers look for

Weekly review & what comes next

Every week we meet to look at your progress. The rhythm:

  • You bring: your focus summary from the diagnostic (and, later, your practice answers and lab write-ups).
  • We set: the 2–3 focus areas for the coming week, drawn from your "Not yet" and "Working on it" items.
  • We track: items moving from red → amber → green over the weeks.
After Phase 1, the next phases target your actual gaps: brushing up the weak technical areas, deep STAR interview practice with your own stories, and the IAM-tailored CV/LinkedIn. We build them only where the diagnostic says you need them — no wasted weeks.
